Newton Labs Baffle Former Assembly Interior CAD Model Solution

Using Newton's NM300UW Nuclear Underwater Laser Scanner with simply a pole from the bridge a precision 3D CAD model of the interior of the Former Assembly can be created. The NM300UW, combined with Newton's NR200UW Rotate Assembly, gives a complete CAD model of the interior of the Baffle Former Assembly along with a VT-3 inspection pictures including the Baffle-to-Baffle Bolts and Baffle Former Bolt Keepers. The model is sufficiently precise to provide the measurements and condition of the bolt heads and the keepers.

The NM300UW is easily and simply deployed using the underwater laser scanner mounted on a pole lowered from the bridge in approximately the center of the cavity. The NM300UW takes scans at each level, rotated by the NR200UW Pan system, and is then lowered to the next level to complete the scans. The entire process can be typically less than 1 or 2 hours while the fuel is out. The scans are then combined to provide a complete precision 3D CAD model with precision to 0.003 inch accuracy of the interior of the Baffle Assembly with all bolt heads and keepers clearly delineated.

The NM300UW contains a high-resolution human- readable camera that provides live and stored images to ensure the Baffle Former Bolts and Keepers are in place and intact. These images can be reviewed real-time on the refuel floor or sent to remote locations for evaluation including the Outage Control Center, Engineering Programs Department, Nuclear Fuel Department and Outside Vendors for near real-time decision making.
