Underwater Laser Scanners Capture Measurements with Sub-Millimeter Precision
Hardware, piping and structures, especially those underwater, begin to change over time which can affect their function and integrity. Obtaining precise underwater measurements to track changes and degradation is generally difficult and can even, in some cases, be dangerous. Laser scanners by Newton Labs capture those underwater measurements with sub-millimeter precision, as well as being able to quantify rust, wear, fissures and corrosion.
All Newton underwater laser scanners combine rugged, industrial-grade hardware and electronic components with sophisticated, Newton-developed algorithms that make underwater scanning possible by compensating for the challenges of refraction, turbulence and suspended particulates found in the aquatic environment.
Each scanner head houses a laser, a high-resolution video camera and a high-intensity LED ring array and is supplied in their own airline-transportable luggage case. The communications cable is a standard length of 150 ft. (46m) and lengths up to 300 ft. (91.44m) may be special ordered.
M200UW Scanner
The M200UW is designed for very high-detailed underwater inspection and measurements.
- It has an effective scanning distance of between 6 in. (150mm) and out to a distance of 3 ft. (0.9m) for a scan coverage area of 2.1 ft. x 2.9 ft. (64 cm x 88 cm)
- The small housing of the M200UW, at 4“x 4.6”x 9,” means that it can be maneuvered close to target areas that may be located in harder-to-reach spaces
- See a specifications sheet HERE.
M300UW Extended Distance Scanner
Time-efficient surveys and precise measurements of larger underwater facilities, from bridge and pier substructures to smaller, submerged piping and valve assemblies are now possible.
- The M300UW is specifically designed to operate underwater with a stand-off scanning distance of between 1.5 feet (0.46 m) and 10 feet (3 m) from the target surface
- The M300UW provides precise dimensioning of as-built features, cracks, welds, rust, pitting and other deformities
- The versatile M300UW, like the M200UW, is designed to operate in either water or air
- See a specifications sheet HERE.
Scanner Control Console
All models of Newton underwater laser scanners use a similar style of control console.
- The console unit consists of a scanner control unit mounted in a metal electronics cabinet within a molded, high-impact airline-transportable case
- The control unit is loaded with Newton scanning software
- The unit houses a solid-state storage unit and a USB output port for flash-drive storage
- The control unit comes with a wireless keyboard and trackball
- In addition to displaying the software user interface, the monitor screen also shows the scanned area in real time, enabling on-site analysis and easy choice of the area to be scanned
- For shipment, the screen is securely covered by the snap-on shell of the transport case
- See a specifications sheet HERE
