Newton Labs' NM200UW Nuclear Underwater Laser Scanner Used to Produce CAD Model of PWR Reactor Head Thermal Sleeves
Newton Labs' NM200UW Nuclear Underwater Laser Scanner Used to Produce CAD Model of PWR Reactor Head Thermal Sleeves

Thomas Myers, Duke 3D Metrology Manager https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-myers-duke-metrology/, and Brad Medlin, Duke 3D Metrology Design Engineer
https://www.linkedin.com/in/brad-medlin-418a5967/,
were assigned the difficult task of creating an accurate 3D Model of the PWR Reactor Head Thermal Sleeves

Previously hindered by inaccurate historical as-built information, PWR Reactor Head Thermal Sleeves have experienced failure modes that have prompted utilities to take mitigating actions.

Utilizing Newton's NM200UW Laser Scanner, accuracies up to 0.005 inches can be realized. Using Newton's
NM200EVT-1, accurate resolutions up to  .001 inch can be obtained
.
Brad engineered a special fixture to position the NM200UW under the Reactor Head so that the laser scans could be accomplished and completed. The Thermal Sleeve laser scans produced an accurate 3D CAD model.

Thomas and Brad were successfully trained by the Newton Team to use the NM200UW on a conference call (due to COVID pandemic travel restrictions) in less than 4 hours.
