Reverse Engineering the Baffle Former Assembly
Newton Labs Baffle Former Assembly Interior CAD Model Solution

Using Newton's NM300UW Nuclear Underwater Laser Scanner a precision 3D CAD model of the interior of the Former Assembly can be created. The NM300UW, combined with Newton’s PT200UW Rotate/Tilt, gives a complete CAD model of the interior of the Baffle Former Assembly. The model is sufficiently precise to provide the measurements and condition of the bolt heads and the keepers. The delivered 3D CAD model can be used to support current outage contingencies or future outage activities.

The NM300UW outputs a point cloud that then is converted to a CAD model. The NM300UW is easily and simply deployed by the use of the underwater laser scanner mounted on a pole lowered from the bridge in approximately the center of the cavity. The NM300UW takes scans at each level, rotated by the PT200UW system, and is then lowered to the next level to complete the scans. The entire process can be typically less than 1 to 2 hours. The scans are then combined to provide a complete precision 3D CAD model with precision to 0.010 accuracy of the interior of the Baffle Assembly with all bolt heads and keepers clearly delineated.

An added feature is that the NM300UW contains a high-resolution human-readable camera that provides live VT-3 resolution images to ensure the Baffle Former Bolts and Keepers are in place and intact.  These images can be reviewed real-time on the refuel floor or sent to remote locations for evaluation including the Outage Control Center, Engineering Programs Department, Nuclear Fuel Department and Outside Vendors for near real-time decision making.
